Available for decades, gamma cameras are available in a variety of configurations. The most common group are general purpose cameras intended for all types of nuclear medicine procedures. These cameras may be equipped with one, two or more detectors to balance equipment cost to performance – i.e. duration of the imaging procedures. Today’s typical general purpose camera has two detectors, reducing the duration of imaging in half, compared to a single detector system.
Apart from general purpose cameras, gamma cameras are also available in various configurations tailored for one, or a limited number of procedures. By taking advantage of limited field of application - these cameras deliver a range of benefits such as reduced room size requirements, ease of use, and higher patient throughput, and are less expensive than cameras intended for all nuclear imaging procedures.
